Harry Potter Fanon Wiki

The Layout Guide is an official guide as to how an in-universe article should be structured. By adhering to this layout guide we will add more uniformity across all the pages, and give the wiki a more professional look. The following topics are placed in the order which they should be displayed in their respective articles.

In-Universe Articles

One of the two types of articles that can be created by normal editors in the wiki, the in-universe articles give information about characters, events, locations, objects, and other things. As such, they must transmit as much detailed information as possible. And while there are diverse types of in-universe articles, all must contain the following (with certain exceptions):

  • Infobox - An infobox is the box of statistics on the right side of an article. A relevant infobox contains statistics and known information in a comprehensible chart. A limited amount of background information on the subject is also present. Articles that only have an infobox are forbidden, and will be subject to immediate deletion. For a list of all infobox templates, please see the "Infobox templates" category.
  • Opening quote - An opening quote is welcome for almost any type of article, and can be included by using this template. Quotes can be said by the article's subject, or said by someone else about the article's subject. Do not use links within a quote, unless it is the only mention in the article of a certain subject. If the speaker is another subject please include a link. Also, do include a source whenever possible or necessary. And, if the quote is not a simple quote but includes dialogue between multiple characters see Category:Quote and dialogue templates.
  • Introduction - The introduction of an article should be a sufficient lead that has at least two hundred words or more. All introductions should be written as if they were to be featured on the main page as a Featured Article. Who, What, Where, When, Why and, if applicable, How, should all be covered in as much detail as possible. This section is required.
  • Main article - The main article is the most important part of an article, as it is where the majority of the information resides. This section is divided into various sub-sections, each dedicated to certain aspects of the topic of the article. Using a character article as an example, the "Biography" and "Magical abilities and skills" are some of the sub-sections that can be used.
  • Behind the scenes - The behind the scenes information is information regarding inspiration, origin and the reason the article was created. This section should not be written as a bulleted list. This section is recommended.
  • Appearances - The appearances section documents any appearances the subject of the article has had. If the fanon character or concept covered in the article is part of an unencyclopaedic fan fiction, novella, short story or other fan-devised media in or outside the Harry Potter Fanon Wiki, it should be mentioned in this section. The list should be in bulleted form in an in-universe chronology. If the subject’s appearance is only a brief mention, apply the {{Mo}} template. For the subject’s first appearance in a series (in order of publication, not in order of in-universe chronology), apply the {{1st}} template. If the subject’s first appearance in the series is only a mere mention, use the {{1st Mention}} template. If the subject is not named in its first appearance but it is identified in a later source, first use the {{1st}} template and then the {{1stID}} template. If you so desire, you can find other "appearance templates" to use in this category.
  • Notes and references - While not a required section, the "Notes and references" section is useful to list sources of information. Items are added to the list by placing <ref>Source goes here</ref> after the information tidbit in question. These citations also need to be made outside of the punctuation (i.e. after the period and outside any quotation marks). To get the references to show up in this section, insert the {{Reflist}} template.
  • See also - The see also section should include links related to the topic that are not linked to in the article. It is generally reserved for links to gallery or family pages that do not belong in the main article. This section is used only if applicable.
  • External links - The external links section is used to link to other sources or websites in which the subject might be mentioned, covered in alternate detail or discussed. Even if there is only one link, the name of the section is to remain plural. This section is used only if applicable.
  • Succession box - These serve two purposes: to list the time period for which an individual (or other entity) held a certain post/title, and to provide links to their immediate predecessor and/or successor. Do not insert succession boxes for titles that were unique to a certain individual and, therefore, result in no predecessors or successors. The same applies if the individual is the only known holder of the title, such as Lord Voldemort, for example. If the individual was the first or last person to hold a certain title, the “Preceded By” or “Succeeded By” section should read “None”. If there are no known predecessors or successors, the sections should read “Unknown”. However, if there are some known predecessors or successors, the section should read “Unknown, eventually <name of closest individual>”. Order succession boxes by the years in which the position was held. The earliest held position is first. If multiple positions have the same starting year, then the earlier ending year is first, etc.
  • Category - Every article on the Harry Potter Fanon Wiki is required to be in at least one category. Maintenance categories such as Category:Articles being improved do not count. Categorizing articles by author does not either, though it is encouraged to add that as an additional category. Categories should be listed in alphabetical order. For a list of categories, please see this page.

A character page is supposed to be the main repository of detailed information regarding a certain character, raging from the circumstances of the birth and prior events, to the impact that said character had in the story's universe even after their deaths. This, of course, is but an example. What follows is the ordered structure which a character article should follow:

  • Infobox - For maximum efficiency, the "Individual infobox" should be used for characters, alongside the themes available in this page.
  • Opening Quote - A quote related to the character in question should do the trick. A dialogue related to the character can also be used here.
  • Introduction text - Introduce the character and follow the steps described in the first "Introduction" topic above.

Main article

  • Biography - This describes the character's life in detail. Information here should be divided in sub-headers, according to different phases during the character's life, such as "Childhood", "Hogwarts years", and "Later life and death". Said sub-headers can also be divided and go into even more detail, allowing for a more complex article.
  • Physical appearance - This section is used to describe the physical appearance of the character across their life, as well as usual fashion choices.
  • Personality and traits - If enough information is available, then this section is used to describe the personality of the character and all traits they have. Personal tastes in food, for example, fall under this category.
  • Possessions - Used to describe the main possessions of the character, such as a wand, heirloom, or an artefact which they possessed.
  • Magical abilities and skills - In here, you create a list of the various magical (and non-magical) abilities of the character, as well as skills (be they magical or non-magical as well).
  • Career accomplishments - While not necessary, in here you can describe important accomplishments that your character, well... accomplished in their career (or careers).
  • Relationships - This section is useful to describe the relationship your character has with others, such as their family, friends, organisations, and even enemies.
  • Etymology - In here, you explain what the character's name means, alongside it's root. This section can aso be used to express who or what was responsible for naming the subject, if was it based on anything, etc.

  • Behind the scenes - Use this to explain how the character came to be, where it first appeared, who was responsible for creating the character and naming it, as well as if the character was based on anything. Also, you can use the "Behind the scenes" to point out contradictions regarding the character's background, especially useful if they come from a fan-fiction series.
  • Appearances - A list of all the works your character has appeared in, displayed by order of "publication". Do see the first section of the layout guide for more information.
  • Notes and references - For this section, follow the instructions in the first part of the guide.
  • Succession boxes - Useful to display the titles and positions which your character held in life (and possibly death, is that's what happens in your story). This always appears after the "Appearances" section (or the "Notes and references" if you have that one). Order the succession boxes by the years in which the position was held. Therefore, the earliest held position is to be the first. To properly create this section in your article, the "Succession box" template is used.
