The "Departamento de Misterios" (Department of Mysteries) is an special section within the Ministerio de Seguridad y Defensa of the Argentinian Council of Magic, that carries out confidential research regarding particular enigmas (such as death, time, space, thought, and love) and stores copies of prophecies. Most of its operations are carried out in total secrecy from the general wizard populace, so few wizards within the Council actually knows what's located within this department. It's members are known as "Inefables" (Unspeakables) as they are prohibited by Vow to speak to anyone outside of their highest clearence about their job.

Due to the highly classified nature of this department, it has been granted a great deal of independence, being the only one within the entire Council that did not need to answer to the Ministry of Security and Defense. Even the President of the Argentinian Council has very little authority over the department's operations.

In reality, this Department acts as a Intelligence Agency within the wizarding Rio de la Plata.

Location

The Department of Mysteries lays on the final floor in the Level Seven of the Palacio Central, Buenos Ayres. It's accessible via the lifts from the Council's entry Atrium. This level bore a striking difference to those above: the floor is crimson red and the black-tiled walls are bare with no windows and no doors, apart from a plain black one at the end of the corridor that leads into the Department proper. Light is provided only by torches, which glowed with a blue-white light.

Behind the black door is the Entrance Chamber, which is designed to disorient any unauthorised personnel who enters it. It's a circular room with a dark marble floor that looks almost like standing water, candles emitting a cool blue light.

Inefables

The Inefables (Unspeakables) are agents that have taken an Unbreakable Vow so their work is completely secret, can only be shared with the Minister of Security and Defense and the President, and even then they aren't told the "whole picture". Inefables are selected by the Department by secret means and once the candidates are told about it they have the choice to be directly inducted or have his memory erased. The selection pool is based upon the Council and specially those in the GNRP, but it's posible for outsiders to be selected, as long as they are Argentinians by birth. The Induction process (while not fully known) involves the candidate taking a secret potion and suffering through an spiritual-like process. The Inefables' uniform is a grey coloured and unmarked robe outside formal attire. The Inefables are divided in three categories: Operativos (field agents), Investigadores (Lab researchers) and Comandancia (bosses).

History

The Department of Mysteries was established in 1829 by the order of then Minister of War (currently Ministry of Security and Defense) Nicanor de la Vega, who entrusted it's creation to his Chief Auror Hipolito Rodriguez. Initially created as an "internal affairs" police (as to further oversight and control the GNRP) it quickly evolved into a fully wizarding intelligence agency.

Trivia

  • The name of the department may be an allusion to the Mysteries of the Ancient Greek and Roman religions, in which admission and knowledge was restricted through arcane initiation rites. The word "mystery" literally means "initiation." The Eleusinian Mysteries were the most famous and important of these.
  • In Argentina, there is a common myth refering the secret police known as "la Mazorca" (created in 1829 to pursue and torture dissidents during the Rosas presidency), which according to the myth has existed ever since.
