The Deinonychus is a species of dinosaur that lived during the early Cretaceous period and is an ancestor of modern day birds. Although they're extinct, Deinonychus are one of various animals an animagus can turn into, as well as being a form of the Patronus Charm.

Etymology

The name Deinonychus means "terrible claw": "deino" means terrible in Greek and "onux, onukh" means claw in Latin.
